Violinist Sakura Tsai performs regularly in Los Angeles and abroad as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. A winner of several prizes, her performances has been featured live on radio and television broadcasts around the world. An avid performer of contemporary music, Sakura is an involved member of the What’s Next? Ensemble, a Los Angeles based new music group, and additionally, collaborates with other new music ensembles in Los Angeles including The Definiens Project and the USC Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble. While a violinist with the CME String Quartet, Sakura performed with composer Steven Mackey in Physical Property, his composition for electric guitar and string quartet. Sakura has also recently premiered Alan Louis Smith’s Adagietti-Improvisations for Violin and Piano.
Sakura has participated in numerous festivals and seminars such as Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival’s Orchestral Academy, Encore School for Strings, The Castleman Quartet Programs, and Music Masters Course Japan. She has performed in masterclasses taught by Gil Shaham, Midori, Corey Cerovsek, the Juilliard, Guarneri, Takács, Emerson, Ysaye, Borromeo, and Tokyo String Quartets, eighth blackbird, Joseph Silverstein, Martin Chalifour, Daniel Froschauer (Vienna Philharmonic), Martin Katz, and Anne Epperson. Her orchestral experience includes serving as concertmaster of the USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra. Currently, Sakura is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance at University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
